Approaching Friends and Family about OFTW

Those of us interested in OFTW often intentionally or inadvertently inform our family and friends about OFTW and the pledge to donate 1%. Of course, information already exists here to ask people to take the pledge, but we wanted to give a bit of advice on how to approach family and friends at our own school, at a different school, or the friends and family we all have already in the workforce about the ways they can help save the world’s poorest people.

Contents:

Friends at your school:

  1. Friends as potential co-founders
  2. Friends as potential members
  3. Friends as potential pledgers

Friends at a different school

  1. Founding a chapter
  2. Joining a chapter
  3. Friends and family already in the workforce

Friends at your school:

As potential co-founders:

  1. A good strategy to tell how into OFTW your friends are is to simply tell them you are founding a chapter. How do they react? It could be that the most excited and interested in the idea are the ones you want to co-found your chapter with you.
  2. Ask yourself, ‘which among my friends is a) driven, b) passionate about global causes, and c) could I work well with?’
  3. When asking friends to co-found a chapter with you, you can bring it up in conversation or ask them specifically to hangout and chat about an opportunity you have with them, (i.e. go on a walk, get coffee together, etc.)
  4. Convey the massive impact they could have by advocating for the world’s poorest people.

As potential members:

  1. If people are uninterested in committing to the time commitment of co-founding a chapter, they may still fall into the category of new members.
  2. Ask them! You never know if you don’t ask.
  3. Similar to above, although bringing OFTW in random conversation can be effective, asking them to hangout specifically to talk about OFTW and becoming a member could be effective. (i.e. go on a walk, get coffee together, etc.)

As potential pledgers:

  1. You can find advice on having the Pledge Conversation here.
  2. If they are uninterested in founding or becoming Advocates/Ambassadors, your friends may still want to take the pledge!

Friends at a different school:

As founders:

  1. One way you can have a massive impact is to simply ask your friends at other schools if they have heard about OFTW. If they become interested, start a chapter, and that chapter goes on to recruit thousands of pledges, all of those lives saved can be traced back to that single conversation you had with them.
  2. Ask them to talk about this amazing, outstanding, awesome organization you’ve heard of.
  3. In person conversations with a laptop handy are ideal. Over the phone can work great too.
  4. Show them the OFTW top charities, the lists of schools that have OFTW chapters, etc.

Join their school’s chapter:

  1. Get them in touch with their school’s chapter leaders
  2. Show them the OFTW top charities, the lists of schools that have OFTW chapters, etc.

Friends and family already in the workforce:

Taking the pledge:

  1. All-in-all, we think our advice for having the Pledge Conversation is appropriate for friends and family already working as well.
  2. We recommend asking them to chat about OFTW before the conversation rather than bringing it up randomly. This way they won’t be surprised and may have a chance to look us up beforehand.
  3. Have fun! You have the chance to show them how they can help a lot of people.
